Lovers The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Oct. 3 2010

Brian Friel's bittersweet 1967 work comprises two one-acts about Catholic couples in Northern Ireland. In "Winners," 17-year-old Joe and his pregnant girlfriend Mag meet atop a hill to study for their final exams. As their playful, poignant, volatile conversation turns to their impending marriage, a pair of narrators informs us of the kids' shared fate. "Losers" concerns a middle-aged husband and wife whose once passionate marriage is ruined by the domineering presence of the woman's pious mother. A fine ensemble under Terry McCabe's direction skillfully negotiate Friel's lilting, long-phrased language, and "Losers" features some of the funniest physical comedy I've ever seen on a Chicago stage. --Albert Williams
