Low Recommended All Ages Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard

When: Wed., Sept. 17, 8 p.m. 2008

The new Low DVD, You May Need a Murderer (Stemra), misses as many marks as it hits. The documentary barely acknowledges the drastic transformation of the Duluth trio’s sound from slow and stripped-down to something much louder and more distorted, and it lets singer-guitarist Alan Sparhawk dodge the subject of his drug addiction by simply admitting that it’s incompatible with his Mormon faith. But when it shows Sparhawk talking about his struggles with mental illness and the sustenance he gets from God and family, then cuts to footage of him sundering the group’s gorgeous vocal harmonies with savage guitar noise, it reveals the conflicting influences of creative fellowship and self-destructiveness that make his music so compelling. Tonight’s show is billed as an “Evening With Low,” so there’s no opening act to blow off. —Bill Meyer
