Lower Dens, Teen, Landmarks Recommended Early Warnings (Music) Sold Out (Music) Soundboard Image

When: Mon., June 15, 9 p.m. 2015

Though Jana Hunter started out a decade ago as an austere, almost narcotic postfolk singer, with Lower Dens she’s worked her voice into a sound that melds hypnotic Krautrock grooves with flashes of shoegazer noise—a musical path that might seem schizophrenic if the group’s new album, Escape From Evil (Ribbon Music), didn’t work so well. But her icy croon feels natural amid the chiming guitars, chill synthesizers, and restrained grooves, and the record summons a kind of 80s throwback sound, albeit one characterized by a seriously bummed-out vibe. Hunter underscores that feeling with the poetic concision of her lyrics, fueled by rhapsodic heartbreak and painful longing. —Peter Margasak
