Lucas Gillan's Many Blessings

When: Thu., March 25, 6:49 p.m. 2010

Lucas Gillan’s Many Blessings is a young jazz group that finds a home in the craggy meeting point between clever composition and fiery improvisation. Gillan plays drums and contributes all of the group’s compositions and arrangements, which owe a large debt to past jazz masters like Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman and Charles Mingus, but also reflect his very contemporary viewpoint on the jazz tradition. A Tucson, AZ native who grew up playing as much punk, hardcore and indie rock as straight-ahead jazz, Gillan brings a diverse set of influences to his playing, writing and bandleading. A recent graduate of the highly respected NIU jazz studies program, Gillan is known both as the program director of Internet jazz radio station and as an active drummer in Chicago’s jazz scene. Completing the group’s lineup is Marquis Hill on trumpet, Jonathon Edwards on baritone sax, and Darius Savage on bass.
