Lucia, Lucia

Fox Searchlight is hoping this Mexican hit, based on Rosa Montero's novel The Cannibal's Daughter, will cross over to the art-house crowd in the manner of Y tu mama tambien; like the latter, it examines a woman's intriguing, erotically ambiguous relationships with two unlikely suitors. Cecilia Roth (All About My Mother) plays a woman trapped in a dead-end marriage whose routines are disrupted by the kidnapping of her husband, a treasury worker. Carlos Alvarez Novoa is an aging Spanish exile who comes to her aid, and Kuno Becker is the randy young man who falls in love with her. Unfortunately the complicated thriller plot—with the regulation suitcase full of illicit cash—hinders the characters' emotional interactions without ever becoming credible on its own terms. In English and Spanish with subtitles. 113 min.
