Lucid Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 28 2010

Like Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody, Tony Fiorentino can do offbeat humor but not real characters. The four in his new script are all smart and glib, differing only in their gender, circumstances, and degree of malaise. Most dissatisfied is Peter, a painter and graphic artist who uses lucid dreaming techniques--involving the conscious manipulation of dreams--to create a fantasy life with a fantasy woman. Unfortunately, this loser also has a real, live, pregnant girlfriend. Will Peter come to his senses? I couldn't make myself care. Throw in a few rants about the criminality of the advertising business, and I still didn't care. Fiorentino's wit, Robert Shoquist's ingenious revolving set, and generally expert performances under Braden LuBell's direction for Diamante Productions are wasted on the callow Peter. --Laura Molzahn
