Lucky | Chicago Reader

In a quiet desert town, a tetchy old atheist named Lucky (Harry Dean Stanton in one of his final roles) feels the weight of his life even as it dwindles. This directorial debut from character actor John Carroll Lynch brims with other familiar faces (Tom Skerritt, David Lynch, Ed Begley Jr.) and intimate conversations about war, mortality, and friendship that the title character seeks out despite—or perhaps because of—his disbelief in souls or divine purpose. The film's heavy themes and deliberate slowness make it feel much longer than it is; even the sun-blanched New Mexico backdrop seems purgatorial. But tracing every step of Lucky's protracted daily routine becomes a powerful exercise in both empathy and discomfort as he ponders the meaning of life and the inevitability of death, without the balm of spirituality.
