When: Tue., Dec. 30, 8 p.m. 2008

LUDACRIS has loaded his sixth album, Theater of the Mind (DTP/Def Jam), with so many big-money cameos (Common, Jamie Foxx, Chris Rock, Jay-Z, Nas, Lil Wayne, T.I., Rick Ross, T-Pain) that he comes off as an almost disposable presence on his own record. Perhaps the most telling track is “Southern Gangsta,” where he brags about how well he’s leveraged his brand—he’s got a few Web sites, a label, a Thai restaurant—and makes the business of actually creating music seem like a piddling and perfunctory component of the total operation. It’s a shame he seems so uninterested, because he’s got the smarts to dash off top-shelf lowbrow humor in his sleep: on “Undisputed” he raps, “Titanic flow / Titanic dough / Women on my nuts, like ‘Where the Titanic go?’” —Peter Margasak
