Macbeth Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Mondays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 21 2010

In her Chicago directing debut, veteran local actor Susan Hart delivers a solidly performed, inventively designed rendition of Shakespeare's tragedy about a Scottish warlord whose royal ambitions are stirred by three witches. Steve Hadnagy effectively charts Macbeth's descent from rationality into moral chaos, and Cameron Feagin registers Lady Macbeth's willful embrace of murderous ruthlessness and then her lapse into conscience-stricken guilt. The witches--Heather Townsend, Shawna Tucker, and Sarah Pretz--create an otherworldly presence, singing and chanting their incantatory speeches. Shakespeare's themes of power and darkness are reinforced by Branimira Ivanova's medieval-style costumes (lots of black leather and metal), and the play's supernatural aspect is heightened by Sean Mallery's eerie lighting and Andrew Hansen's horror-film sound effects. --Albert Williams
