Since well before the dance-music community came anywhere near the mainstream, it’s included a vocal cadre of purists highly suspicious of pop-culture crossover—and the recent EDM boom, which has expanded the genre from the subcultural fringes into insanely expensive Vegas megaclubs, has only strengthened those purists’ arguments. The ten-date Apex tour, of which this is the Chicago stop, says in its press materials that it aims to take “a step away from the bombastic bottle service underpinning much of the current EDM explosion” and return the music to its roots with performances by a rotating cast of DJs’ DJs in unclubby venues. Tonight’s concert features sets by Maceo Plex and Dixon, respectively the number six and number one DJs in the world according to a reader poll by influential dance-music blog Resident Advisor. Their aesthetics are spot-on matches for the tour’s mission: they specialize in the hard-edged house and techno that dominated dance floors well before the turn of the millennium and the advent of dubstep. Pilsen’s Lacuna Lofts aren’t exactly an abandoned warehouse, and the event has some prominent corporate sponsors (including Sapporo), but Plex and Dixon’s body-jacking sets should offer a pretty decent simulation of the good old rave days. —Miles Raymer This is a ticketed event, with no walk-up admission; tickets are available here.
