Madagascar Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Feb. 27 2011

Coming out with a play called Madagascar just a year before the 2005 release of DreamWorks' animated enormity of the same name must feel a bit like christening your child "Adolf" the day before the Beer Hall Putsch. But J.T. Rogers's haunting, intelligent, tightly constructed drama--set in Rome, not Africa--quickly dispels any unfortunate associations. In a hotel room overlooking the Spanish Steps, a mother, daughter, and family friend deliver an intricate series of interlocking monologues that wheel like starlings around a family tragedy. Cora Vander Broek stands out from a rock-solid cast as the daughter, delivering just the sort of offhanded performance needed to keep Rogers's story from feeling over-thought. --Keith Griffith
