Madame Pompadour Recommended Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 2 2015

Chicago Folks’ lively, energetic production of Leo Fall’s 1922 operetta is nearly perfect. The music, performed by a 21-piece orchestra and sung by a cast of gifted singers, is of course superb. Slightly more surprising is how well director Amy Hutchison's ensemble communicates both the charm and the drama of this lightweight but well-told story (here in a new translation by Gerald Frantzen and Hersch Glagov). Kimberly McCord, in particular, shines and shines as the title character, playing with ease all facets of this complex, seductive character. True, the show falters during comic scenes involving either a pair of foolish Paris cops or the equally foolish King Louis XV, but happily those are short. And most of the show is a sheer delight. —Jack Helbig
