Magic in Cinema

A compilation program from cinema's early years, emphasizing the new medium's continuity with 19th-century traditions of stage illusion and visual enchantment. Screening are an extended selection of Georges Melies silents—including The Vanishing Act (1896), The Astronomer's Dream (1898), Excelsior!—Prince of Magicians (1901), and The Black Imp (1905)—Edwin S. Porter's Dream of a Rarebit Fiend (1906), R.W. Paul's The ? Motorist (1906), and Lotte Reiniger's The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926). Program curator Gabe Klinger hosts, and Shannon Harris and Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker provide live musical accompaniment.
