It's easy to lump the Shivas in with the west-coast crew of slightly psychedelic Velvet Underground-influenced rockers, alongside Thee Oh Sees and Fresh & Onlys, especially since the band is based right up I-5 in Portland. But the Shivas' propensity for doo-woppy, 60s-oldies-station asides—where vocalist Kristin Leonard sings lead, not backup—adds another welcome wrinkle to the band's already free-spirited aesthetic. On the recent full-length Whiteout (Burger), though, it's still the straight-up, driving, noisy-but-hazy rock songs that carry most of the clout—the opener, "Swimming With Sharks," is a dark and surfy stomper with vocals so coated in reverb and muck that they blend into the colorful background of guitar squonks and squirbles. Many tracks are about 45 seconds too long, but the Shivas are on to something more original than whatever that band was that ripped off the 13th Floor Elevators at that one show you went to. —Kevin Warwick Magic Milk headlines; the Shivas and Sueves open.
