Magic | Chicago Reader

Rated R 107 minutes 1978

William Goldman's entertaining novel depended on a sneaky literary trick that can't be rendered on the screen, which leaves this would-be thriller (1978) with a tired plot and nothing more. Anthony Hopkins, as the schizophrenic ventriloquist, is no match for Michael Redgrave in Dead of Night, while Ann-Margret, performing without makeup in the sort of bold career move known to be looked upon favorably by Academy Award voters, fumbles some of her easiest readings. Meanwhile, Richard Attenborough's oblivious misdirection tips the proceedings into murky despair. With Burgess Meredith, as bizarre as usual, and a much-needed hint of competence from Ed Lauter.
