Maid to Order

Spoiled heiress Ally Sheedy takes a magical crash course in how the other half lives when she becomes the hired domestic of a wealthy talent agent. A Cinderella reversal in more ways than one, with talented director Amy Jones (Love Letters) taking what amounts to a scullion's plunge into some unaccommodating fantasy slop. The stylization is classical and crisp, shading occasionally toward Love Letters's deft, lyrical moodiness, and Jones has a generous way with her less-than-fully-written characters, but the cartoonish material demands a kind of broad, raucous approach that's beyond her temperamental range. There's a lot to like in the craftsmanly detailing, but the overall mesh is hopeless. With Beverly D'Angelo, Michael Ontkean, Valerie Perrine, Dick Shawn (in his last screen appearance), and Merry Clayton.
