Mail-Order Blues

To the editors:

This letter is in regard to the article in the Reader about the State Street area [September 6].

The article seemed to make the point that object buyers and users of service offered in the State Street area have been lured away by the suburban malls, easy driving and parking, and more interesting environments. This to an extent is true but many people who can afford to purchase things do so through the mail via the phone. No drive, no pollution, no hassles. The mail system has been in place since the early (Sears) catalog and is very easy to deal with. Perhaps the planners have written these people off, but if not they should consider what the State Street area will have to offer to retain the shoppers it has and lure some who may never consider going downtown. The mail-order is the future.
