Malachi Favors: Keep Playin' Till the Lord Says Stop

Less a profile than an extended interview, this 2004 video documentary shows Malachi Favors, veteran bassist for the Art Ensemble of Chicago, reminiscing about his formative years. Video maker Steven Tod seems so awed by the musician that he routinely allows Favors to skip questions, and without any narration or supporting interviews, the story, such as it is, emerges in unrelated bursts. Most of the interview and performance footage (shot at the Velvet Lounge) is distressingly grainy, and too much of the documentary is devoted to driving Favors around the south side as he identifies one vacant lot after another, recalling long-gone theaters and nightclubs. 72 min.
