Male, Good Stuff House, Work, DJ Karl Meier Recommended All Ages Soundboard

When: Sat., Feb. 28, 10 p.m. 2009

On the haunting new Endless Bummer (Root Strata), local trio Good Stuff House adorn their cavernous drone with wonderfully tactile detail. Matt Christensen and Mike Weis of Zelienople and former Souled American guitarist Scott Tuma have been playing together for years in various combinations, crafting mesmerizing collective improvisations bound by the loosest of structures. What’s different about this release is that the occasional interruptions, interpolations, and contrasts work so much better to heighten the emotional effect. On the opening track sparse, irregular drumbeats puncture the murk, then recede to make way for a squealing snake-charmer clarinet; elsewhere delicate guitar picking emerges from within a din of fuzz, then evaporates in clouds of feedback. Good Stuff House can finesse a drone as well as anyone in town, but these fleeting events are what give the music’s constant evolution the element of surprise. Male headlines; Good Stuff House, Work, and DJ Karl Meier open. —Peter Margasak
