Mamma Mia! Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 28 2008

Recognizing that it's essentially an extended commercial for ABBA's greatest hits, the team behind this glitzy concoction--Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (the "BB" in the group) and sketch writer ("book" is a bit generous) Catherine Johnson--are smart enough to keep it mostly free of forced drama. This touring version features Susie McMonagle as Donna, a one-time hippie/disco queen (the timeline gets fuzzy) confronted by three former lovers when her daughter Sophie invites them to her--Sophie's--wedding to determine which is her father. McMonagle brings fire and comic confusion to the role without losing her single mom's spine of steel. The story sags when McMonagle isn't onstage, but the tuneful ensemble should please hardcore fans without annoying the merely curious. --Kerry Reid
