Man of Tai Chi

Rated R 105 minutes 2013

Keanu Reeves makes his directorial debut with this satisfying pastiche of Hong Kong action cinema, incorporating knock-out martial arts choreography (courtesy of the great Yuen Woo-ping), operatic brutality reminiscent of John Woo, balletic camera movements a la Johnnie To, and even some of Jackie Chan’s populist humor. A noble tai chi student (veteran stunt man Tiger Chen) is drawn into an underground fighting league overseen by a shadowy international businessman (Reeves); contestants fight to the death, and surveillance cameras capture the action for dissemination to high-paying viewers around the world. Reeves gets plenty of mileage from this premise, using it to comment on globalization, cinema in the Internet age, and the moral cost of selling out. In English and subtitled Cantonese and Mandarin.
