Man or Astro-Man?, Jaill 18+ Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Soundboard

When: Sat., Oct. 8, 9 p.m. 2011

Rarely does an act dominate a corner of the musical world as thoroughly as Man or Astro-Man? For a while in the late 90s they weren't just the number one instrumental surf-rock band in the world, but due to a brilliantly prankish "franchising" scheme that bordered on performance art, they were actually the top three. (The all-female "Gamma Clones" lineup provided the original some serious competition for the crown.) The fact that Man or Astro-Man? could get so many people into surf rock—which in lesser hands tends to sound like Joe Satriani wankery given a retro-cool makeover—is a testament to their crowd-pleasing talents and the strength of their sci-fi B-movie shtick. After a five-year hiatus they reunited in 2006 for a highly anticipated set at the Touch and Go 25th Anniversary Celebration—featuring a dangerous-seeming onstage combination of a giant Tesla coil and almost total chaos—and it turned out to be one of the event's strongest. —Miles Raymer Jaill opens.
