Marcus Schmickler & Peter Rehberg Recommended All Ages Soundboard Critics' Picks

When: Sat., May 9, 9 p.m. 2009

For more than a decade Marcus Schmickler of Cologne, Germany, and Peter Rehberg (aka Pita) of Vienna, Austria, have been two of the most dominant and original purveyors of experimental electronic music in the world, but though they’ve long played together in the wonderful improvising electronic orchestra MIMEO (with other heavyweights like Keith Rowe, Cor Fuhler, and Christian Fennesz) they’ve only made one recording as a duo. On the 2007 Erstwhile release One (Snow Mud Rain), billed to R/S, they’re at their most ornery and physical. The first piece opens gently enough, with a distant hum of white noise, but soon aggressive digital squiggles and harsh synthetic bursts begin to ripple and then flail across the surface of what’s become a scouring roar, building in intensity and violence over the course of the track’s 20 minutes. The next three pieces (they’re all untitled) offer little respite: each is a battle royale of lacerating electronic tones that writhe and snap like electrified cables cast into a wind-tossed sea. Though Schmickler and Rehberg have each played many memorable shows in Chicago, both solo and in collaborations—Schmickler notably with Thomas Lehn, Rehberg most recently as half of KTL with Stephen O’Malley of Sunn 0)))—this is amazingly their first performance anywhere as a duo. —Peter Margasak
