Maria Bamford Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Aug. 7-8 2009

Maria Bamford came to fame as part of Comedians of Comedy, the alternative-comedy tour--and her comedy is alternative insofar as it eschews punch lines for what she calls "quiet, odd joke-stories." But it's alternative in a traditional way. Delivered in a range of pitch-perfect voices, Bamford's vignettes of family life, pet ownership, and city dwelling owe a debt to storytellers like Bill Cosby and David Sedaris. The style requires great timing and small miracles of wording ("Do you know what it's like for animals to wear clothing? Do you want me to hogtie you to an airport travel pillow?"), and on her latest album, Unwanted Thoughts Syndrome, it all comes together in a marvelous leap forward. The finest moments are the subtlest, like the one where a friend calls Bamford's cell and, learning she's on public transportation, asks, "Oh my God, are you all right?" --Whet Moser
