Maria Tallchief

Admiring but not especially illuminating, this 2007 TV documentary follows the great prima ballerina Maria Tallchief from her childhood in a prosperous Osage community in Oklahoma through her studies with the legendary Bronislava Nijinska in Beverly Hills to her emergence as a featured soloist with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. As a teen she became muse to choreographer George Balanchine; they later married and transformed 20th-century dance with the rise of their New York City Ballet. Director Sandra Osawa fails to penetrate her subject's patrician demeanor, but the disciplined Tallchief reveals herself most onstage: archival clips show a powerful athleticism, an elegant line, and an extraordinary passion. 58 min.
