Martyr The Short List (Theater) Image Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through May 23 2015

High-schooler Benjamin's fundamentalist Christian zealotry compels him to strip naked in sex-ed class, take swimming class fully clothed, shout down the headmaster with a torrent of Bible verses, and plot at least one murder. His atheist biology teacher, hoping to beat Benjamin at his own game, devotes so much time to Bible study her husband moves out. Benjamin’s mother treats her son’s intractable mania like a mildly annoying teenage phase. Perhaps German playwright Marius von Mayenburg’s 2012 drama would feel plausible if played to absurdist excess. But director Joanie Schultz opts for something closer to social realism, creating two markedly unconvincing hours. It's no help that as Benjamin, Brando Crawford delivers nearly every line at the same insistent pitch, until his character devolves into an unvarying harangue. —Justin Hayford
