Marvin's Room The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Sept. 30 2012

Playwright Scott McPherson lived just long enough to see this darkly funny drama open off-Broadway in 1991, after an initial run at the Goodman Theatre. Although the script makes no mention of AIDS, its gallows humor is clearly a cultural product of the epidemic that claimed both McPherson and his partner, cartoonist Daniel Sotomayer. Amanda Hartley is believable in the difficult role of Bessie, a generous spirit who's diagnosed with leukemia after having spent decades caring for her seriously ill father. But the age-blind (or at least astigmatic) casting of Mary Redmon's Circle Theatre production works against the story, which has flaws of its own. Although death lurks in the wings for the entire play, McPherson never effectively confronts it. —Keith Griffith
