Mary's Wedding Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays and Sun., Jan. 17, 6 p.m. Continues through Feb. 20 2010

It's impossible to overpraise Mark Ulrich's perfect Rivendell Theatre Ensemble production of a captivating script. Stephen Massicotte's powerfully poetic play employs the strategic repetition of certain phrases in different contexts to create a 90-minute meditation on love's value and war's cost. As Mary experiences a deeply healing dream two days before her wedding in 1920, interpenetrating scenes depict her 1914 romance with Charlie--a decent Canadian farmboy who loves horses, fears lightning, and is eager to fight the Kaiser--and a series of incredibly right letters link them in love and death. Cassandra Bissell and Shane Kenyon are electrically convincing as once and future lovers, souls from different backgrounds who aren't just right for each other, but are, crucially, good to each other. --Lawrence Bommer
