Mataharis | Chicago Reader

On the case in Madrid, three female private detectives learn more than they expected in this 2007 feature that uses mystery and melodrama to explore issues of personal and social responsibility. The oldest woman, Carmen (Nuria Gonzalez), is forced to reevaluate her marriage when she and a client develop a mutual attraction. The youngest, Ines (Maria Vazquez), not long out of college, finds her ideals tested when an assignment to uncover corporate theft turns out to be about advancing corporate greed. Eva (Najwa Nimri), the middle operative, begins surveillance on her own husband after she catches him in a lie. Award-winning director-screenwriter Iciar Bollain juggles the multiple story threads with dexterity, for a diverting if not particularly challenging entertainment. In Spanish with subtitles. 95 min.
