Mavis Staples’ contralto has not only lost none of the grit it had in her 1970s commercial heyday, when she was the lead voice of the Staple Singers, it’s also gained depth and authority—and you can hear proof all over the forthcoming Live: Hope at the Hideout (Anti-). Due on election day, the album documents a fiery June 23 Hideout show where she was backed by a raw trio featuring guitarist Rick Holmstrom, who’ll also lead her band here; his playing echoes the brooding, tremolo-drenched style of Mavis’s father, Pops Staples, on the group’s early-60s sides for Vee-Jay and Riverside. Openers Booker T. & the M.G.’s backed the Staple Singers in the late 60s as the de facto Stax Records house band, and three-fourths of that lineup is still aboard: guitarist Steve Cropper, bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn, and of course keyboardist Booker T. Jones. Tonight’s show is a benefit for the Old Town School of Folk Music; John Ciba of the East of Edens Soul Express spins. —Renaldo Migald
