Mayer Hawthorne, Quadron 18+ Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Sold Out (Music) Soundboard Image

When: Fri., Feb. 14, 8 p.m. 2014

It’s rare to encounter a song that sounds as totally like an in-the-bag hit as Quadron’s “Hey Love” did last spring. Its combination of a giddy, ass-shaking beat and the swoon-worthy, vintage-soul-tinged vocals of front woman Coco O made it seem like a shoo-in for summer-radio dominance. But for some inexplicable reason the single didn’t manage to connect with audiences outside the dance-pop duo’s native Denmark, and most Americans today remain tragically unacquainted with its near perfection. Avalanche (Epic), the album from which it came, is equally deserving of attention, with bits of classic Minnie Riperton, disco-era Michael Jackson, and 90s trip-hop and club pop all wrapped up in an approachably hip, contemporary package. All hope’s not lost, though: after seeing singles by Ellie Goulding and Icona Pop become long-tail smashes, I have good reason to believe that the group can still find the huge American audience it deserves. Fingers crossed that Lena Dunham decides to place “Hey Love” in an episode of Girls. —Miles Raymer Mayer Hawthorne headlines.
