Born on the Pilsen side of town, MAYOR DALEY play big ugly antirock with a primordial churn that marks them out as one of very few worthy aspirants to Coughs’ throne (alongside Cacaw, who are playing Thursday at the Hideout). Their songs tend to seesaw between two chords or stomp mercilessly on one, gouging at the same tiny plot of deeply warped din, chinging and clanging, bursting and buckling. Front woman Kelly Carr yodels with abandon, like a dosed Swiss Miss trying to call down the mothership in a mountain glen—she might sing actual lyrics every so often, but nonwords like “Hahahahaha!” and “Eeee-awww!” are her usual refrains. Onstage the band is trance inducing, a sort of girl-tastic throwback to early 90s AmRep-style punishment grind. -Jessica Hopper
