McMeekin Finds Out The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 14 2010

Scott Barsotti's new comedy has plenty of laughs but falls apart in the end, a victim of contrivances. Set in working-class Pittsburgh, with clockwork shout-outs to the "Stillers," Barsotti's play concerns 17-year-old Carla McMeekin, who believes she raped a football player at a party. The intriguing questions about sexuality, power, and forgiveness that Barsotti introduces get short shrift, but he has a showman's knack for riotous one-liners, and Damon Kiely's direction for Route 66 Theatre Company keeps the ludicrous situations from becoming too over-the-top annoying. As Carla's parents--both in casts from a car accident--Kate Buddeke and Randy Steinmeyer nail the exasperation of long-marrieds. --Kerry Reid
