Me Too

A 34-year-old virgin in Seville (Pablo Pineda, marvelous) refuses to let his Down syndrome crush his dreams in this bittersweet 2009 Spanish drama, which is gratifying for its lack of sentimentality. High-functioning and ironic, the hero lands a government office job and promptly tumbles for a frowsy coworker (Lola Duenas of Broken Embraces and Volver) whose low self-esteem leads her to drink too much and sleep around. A disarming frankness about the sexuality of the disabled and the fears and prejudices of others elevates the movie above such American fare as I Am Sam. Alvaro Pastor and Antonio Naharro direct with understatement and a cosmopolitan flair, best seen in a denouement that’s both tender and offbeat. In Spanish with subtitles.
