Produced by Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels and scripted by Tina Fey, this high school satire (2004) is pleasantly acted and moderately funny, but it lacks the genuine bile that made Heathers (1989) so bracing. Lindsay Lohan stars as a pretty teen who enrolls at a North Shore snake pit after being home-schooled in Africa all her life; she falls in with a pair of sarcastic losers but is also recruited by the Plastics, a trio of petty social butterflies. This opens with a dig at gay-bashing evangelicals, but by the end its sole lesbian character has found a boyfriend, suggesting that, after all these years, Michaels's most radical statement remains his blazer-and-blue-jeans look. Mark S. Waters directed.
