Medea With Child The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Sat., March 13, Tue., March 16, Wed., March 17 and Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through April 25 2010

In this fractured-fairy-tale take on Euripides, playwright Janet Burroway reimagines Medea as a black "voodoo mama" from a faraway island, now living in a strange, media-soaked kingdom. Her husband--an adventurer-turned-PR guy--unleashes her destructive fury by having an affair with a ditzy princess. Burroway has some affecting if familiar things to say about the Other as both fetish object and scapegoat. But most of the time the play's tone is irritatingly arch--full of tedious wordplay and self-referential irony. Jonathan Green's staging for Sideshow Theatre Company has terrible sightlines. It benefits, though, from rambunctious performances--particularly the scene-stealing work of Andrew Sa and Lea Pascal as Medea's playfully morbid kids. --Zac Thompson
