To the editors:

This may come as a shock to Alan Boomer, who has spent the last 15 years of his life "looking out the window, thinking of Levi Cobb's turnaround jumper" [The Sports Section, March 1].

But Levi Cobb didn't make the shot that beat West Aurora for the 1976 Class AA basketball championship.

Laird Smith did.

It's on videotape.

Yes, Levi Cobb was there. He was Morgan Park's star, an all-stater. And Alan Boomer may have followed him to the University of Illinois.

But Laird Smith took the game-winning shot.

Alan Boomer replies:

I bow to the experts.
