Men of Tortuga Member Picks The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Dec. 7 2008

Three crooked businessmen hire a black-market weapons expert to plot the assassination of a reformer in this boardroom comedy-cum-political thriller by Jason Wells. We never see the reformer or learn the nature of his reforms--but he's represented, in a way, by an earnest, somewhat sanctimonious outsider who tries to hammer out a compromise with the senior member of the cabal, never suspecting that the old lion has already settled on a more drastic solution. The conspirators' elaborate plotting and farcical bungling verge on silly, but the conflict between idealism and stubbornness resonates, particularly in this election year. Rick Snyder's taut production capitalizes on these tensions, especially in the performance of Jack McCabe, who brings a gnarled nobility to the senior conspirator's recalcitrance. --Zac Thompson
