Ann Filmer directs the world-premiere production of Aline Lathrop’s intelligent and open-hearted play about a young man who has gender dysphoria—and what happens when his otherwise open-minded family hires a conservative psychologist to “cure” him. Lathrop’s graceful play never gets bogged down in didacticism; it is matched well by Filmer’s strong casting and subtle direction. Malcolm Callan and Lia D. Mortensen are compelling as the baffled parents, but Peyton Shaffer, as the child at the center of the story, steals the show with her remarkable performance.
