Mexican Wrestling Macbeth Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays. Continues through July 28 2012

A B-movie director casts Mexican wrestlers in an adaptation of the Scottish play, and pretty soon the behind-the-scenes maneuverings start to resemble Shakespeare's tragedy. The trouble starts when a burly luchadora (Gabe Garza sporting a cone bra and Amy Winehouse wig) becomes intent on getting the role of Lady Macbeth and starts browbeating her milquetoast boyfriend into disposing of anyone who gets in her way. She's got a retinue of Aztec mummies and robot assassins in case he should fail. The slapstick could be crisper in Warwick Johnson's rough-and-tumble staging for the Mammals. Still, the primary gag of Bob Fisher's script is a good one: all the dialogue is read by three offstage performers so that the whole thing looks like a poorly dubbed movie. —Zac Thompson
