Michael McDonald | the Improv | Stand-Up | Chicago Reader

Michael McDonald Critic's Choice Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: May 28-30 2009

As MADtv's longest-running cast member (1998-2007), Michael McDonald created some of the most audacious yet vulnerable--and physically demanding--characters in contemporary sketch comedy, notably the terrifying man-child Stuart Larkin. Since then the southern California native has focused on directing (Scrubs, MADtv), but stand-up is a natural fit for him, drawing from the same deep wells that nurtured his character work--people he grew up with and jobs he's held (kindergarten aide, waiter, loan officer). He says the star of his routine is his mother, whose frumpy look, excessive doting, and penchant for drink also informed Stuart's fictional mom Doreen. --Ryan Hubbard
