Mighty Joe Young | Chicago Reader

Mighty Joe Young

As a result of the evil deeds of some poachers in the mountains of central Africa, Charlize Theron has become the protector and symbolic sibling of an extra-large gorilla, but she may have to accept the help of zoologist Bill Paxton to keep mighty Joe out of harm's way. A remake without a savvy tone runs the risk of seeming naive rather than innocent, and this one (1998), based on a 1949 movie, is dumber than it is charming. The wooden characters aren't campy, and Joe's hulking screen presence gets old fast. Ron Underwood directed a screenplay by Mark Rosenthal and Lawrence Konner; with Rade Sherbedgia.
