Mighty Peking Man | Chicago Reader

Mighty Peking Man

Johnny catches his girlfriend in bed with his brother, whose ludicrous explanation—“It began as a joke, we didn't mean to”—enlivens this flashback, which is meant to show why Johnny is desperate enough to join a dangerous expedition setting out from Hong Kong in search of a giant ape-man. In the jungle Johnny falls for Samantha, an orphan whose relationship with the big ape is confusing, given its reaction to Johnny after he sucks the venom from a rattlesnake bite strategically located on her inner thigh, etc. All but oblivious to an entrepreneur's scheme to exploit the captive creature, Johnny and Samantha accompany it to the city, where they're continually surprised at the mayhem that results. The rear projection, mismatched cuts, makeshift effects, and stilted, dubbed dialogue in this 1977 movie won't disappoint camp fans, but the sexual-jealousy theme is even funnier. Directed by Ho Meng-hua; with Danny Lee and Evelyne Kraft.
