Millions (A Lottery Story)

Video maker Paul La Blanc profiles six people who've won gigantic sums on the lotto, a nifty idea for a documentary that turns out to be a bone-crushing bore on-screen. Their differing responses to the sudden windfall provide some insights into human nature: a Nashville man who squandered his winnings now works in a prison ministry and hopes he'll get lucky again; a Minnesota woman who could easily retire hangs on to her happy job as a dishwasher at a high school cafeteria. But La Blanc doesn't press his winners for personal information, so it's hard to tell how their lives might have been upended. The randomness of winning the lottery works against this 2006 video, producing a painfully dull and unreflective cast of characters. 101 min.
