Mirror | Theater Critic's Choice | Chicago Reader

Englishman Andrew Chalk and Germany's Christoph Heemann, who've collaborated under the name Mirror since the late 90s, have been operating on the fringes of experimental music for nearly two decades. Heemann founded the early industrial group H.N.A.S. in the 80s and has worked with collagists and mod musique concrete practitioners like Nurse With Wound, Coil, and Current 93, while Chalk has focused primarily on solo electronic work, at first under the name Ferial Confine and more recently under his real name. Before founding Mirror, both men separately worked in Organum, the shifting group of musicians helmed by David Jackman, a sometime participant in Cornelius Cardew's Scratch Orchestra. Organum's work was influenced by the improvisational brilliance and pure-sound focus of another Cardew project, AMM, and that's also true of Mirror. On a handful of limited-edition vinyl releases, the duo construct gentle gray washes of sound that shift organically in density, volume, and tone--and unless a listener is willing to immerse himself in the music, it can sound rather unremarkable. For this weekend's two-night stand--only the second U.S. visit by the duo and the first time either man has ever performed in Chicago--they'll combine prerecorded material, played back on four CD players, with live guitar and organ. They'll be using a quadraphonic PA system, too, which should allow for some interesting movement of sound. Friday and Saturday, March 30 and 31, 10 PM, 6Odum, 2116 W. Chicago; 312-666-4412 or 773-227-3617.
