Miss India Georgia

An amusing, sometimes revealing 1997 video documentary about four young women preparing to compete in the Miss India Georgia beauty pageant in Atlanta. The women are well-adjusted middle-class teenagers; they may complain about the pressure to excel and fit in, but the only dilemmas evident here are choosing the right gown or song-and-dance number. Video makers Sharon Grimberg and Daniel Friedman never explain why these women lust after the title, why their parents beam with pride though they might prefer their kids to become professionals, or how the conformism of the beauty industry affects the immigrant community. By relying uncritically on the subjects' testimony, they end up with a rather jumbled picture of a subculture as it assimilates with a vengeance. 60 min.
