A trendy diner inside the Virgin Hotel.
Miss Ricky's at the Virgin Hotel is an attempt to revive that dying breed, the hotel coffee shop. More relaxed than the dining room, more exciting than room service, and cheaper than both, Miss Ricky's also has the distinction of being one of the few sit-down places in the Loop that's open late. It's full of chrome and vinyl, like Nighthawks. There are TVs, but they show old Busby Berkeley movies, which give the whole experience of being there a slightly dreamlike quality. There are also cocktails. They are very, very strong. The menu makes a couple of nods to the Virgin's British roots in the form of two savory pies—one, a fishy version of a shepherd's pie, isn't bad—but mostly it restricts itself to traditional diner fare (with a few strange twists: feta cheese sticks, "beef wings"), with breakfast all day. A lot of the food is more expensive than it ought to be, especially the oversized $12 grilled cheese that tastes like the one your parents used to make you, without the love. The birthday cake, however, is very good. It would probably be fun to eat it at the counter while you're tipsy, especially if Gold Diggers of 1935 is on.
