Amitabh Bachchan—named actor of the last millennium in an online BBC poll—plays the traditionalist head of an Indian boys' prep school in this 2000 confection directed by Aditya Chopra. Bollywood heartthrob Shahrukh Khan costars as his nemesis, a charming music teacher who materializes out of nowhere to teach the students to follow their hearts. His magic works on three boys, who risk everything to woo a trio of local girls. But the most riveting scenes are between the music teacher and headmaster, whose daughter (another superstar, Aishwarya Rai) has committed suicide after he sent her lover packing. She returns regularly from the dead to urge the rebellion along—and to jump into some of the dance sequences, which are top-notch and visually stunning. Interestingly, there's not a single classroom scene. In English and subtitled Hindi. 216 min.
