Eclectic American restaurant in the Whitehall Hotel.
A winding hall transports you from the conservative Whitehall Hotel lobby to this cozy dining room with the feel of an exotic nightclub, complete with animal-skin upholstery and dim lighting. Joey Rosetti, formerly of Gioco, is in charge of the Mediterranean-influenced American cuisine. Balance and innovation rule in starters like the three-endive salad with apple chips, Humboldt Fog goat cheese, and pistachios; there's also smoked-trout hash with charred peppers, potatoes, and a poached egg. Entree offerings are light, including barbecued prawns wrapped in pancetta, oak-fired poussin with roasted sweet potatoes and braised mustard greens, and roasted filet au poivre with black peppercorn. For dessert you can make your own sampler plate by choosing mini portions of such sweets as blueberry pie, creme brulee (the flavor changes daily), chocolate-macadamia nut tart, and carrot cake. The seasonal menu is matched with an ambitious, frequently changing wine list featuring more than 200 selections. There are also 40 wines poured by the glass, ten microbrews, and a lineup of after-dinner drinks including grappa, cognac, Armagnac, and several single malts.
