Moon Duo started out in San Francisco, spent a couple years in Colorado, and now live in Portland, Oregon, but their style would fit right in here: Chicago's growing psych scene has a healthy attitude about fooling around with garage rock and pop, and so do Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada. On their forthcoming third album, Circles (Sacred Bones), they cook up a hypnotic sound by wrangling waves of ethereal guitar distortion, lumbering motorik drums, and droning synths. The duo's simple pop hooks save the album from sounding like one big jam session, and Johnson's restrained singing—a gravelly whisper that sounds like it's being pushed out of his chest every time he exhales—gives me the creepy feeling that it could explode into a hair-raising howl at any moment. —Leor Galil Redgrave and Verma open.
